Son of Thomas Edwards and Louisa Dorcas Kellett. His mother died in 1851 and he went to work at a young age on a farm in Lima township near Ann Arbor. Enlisted as a Private on 13 March 1864 in Ann Arbor, MI at the age of 18 Assigned to Company C, 1st Infantry Regiment Michigan on 30 March 1864. Mustered out on 09 July 1865 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. In 1870 he was working as a stone cutter in Kalamazoo Co. with his brother Samuel. By 1900 he was in New York City and remained there for the rest of his life. He worked for the Port of New York. By 1910 he was sharing an appartment with a common law wife, Loulla Bowman. Shortly before his death he wrote his niece Ina that "I am troubled with the same kind of sickness that took brothers Tom and John to their long homes." He died of cancer. After he died, Loulla wrote the family to give them the news.
