John H. Edwards was an American Soldier during the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865.

He was born in New York City, New York, and enlisted on June 17th, 1863, in New York City, New York, for three years service at the age of 21, and was mustered into service as a Corporal in Company D of the 9th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 29th, 1863. The 9th Veteran Regiment was merged with several other veteran regiments that were organizing in New York City at the time, and the company was assigned as Company H of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 14th, 1863. He served with the regiment throughout the campaigns in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. On June 24th, 1865, he was placed under arrest in Washington, D.C., no reason was given, and he was discharged as a Private on October 9th, 1865, under the provisions of a Circular from the Adjutant Generals Office dated June 9th, 1865.

At the time of his enlistment he was described as having brown eyes, brown hair, a dark complexion, was 5 ft. 9 in. tall, and was employed as a butcher.
