Fernando was born n Ferryville, know known as Menzel Bourguiba Tunisia, the son of Fernando DiStefano and Antoinette DiStefano of Brooklyn NY. Ferdinando was a History major at St. Francis and studied for a masters degree at Hunter College following graduation. He had six credits to complete for his masters when he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 27 1967 and received his commission as a 2d Lieutenant in the Reserve in Quantico VA. Arriving in Vietnam on October 2, 1967 he was assigned for duty as a Platoon Commander with Company E, 2d Battalion, 26th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

Some four kilometers west of the Khe Sanh Combat Base in Quang Tri Province Company E was on perimeter defense of Hill 861-A under the OPCON (Operation Control) of the 3d Battalion, 26th Marines. On February 24 the Marines came under an NVA rocket attack which killed five Marines. One of the casualties was 2dLt DiStefano who was killed by multiple shrapnel wounds.
