Shirley Estelle Townsend passed away on August 26, 2023 at 83 years old. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, niece and cousin.

Shirley was born in Lampasas, Texas on August 14, 1940 to Lucious and Madie Jernigan. She later moved to Jarrell, Texas and attended Jarrell High School. While visiting First Baptist Church Salado with her sister, she spotted a boy in the choir who would turn out to be her soulmate and the love of her life. She and Weldon were married at FBC Salado on July 6, 1956. Their first home together was in Georgia where Weldon served in the Army. After serving their time in Georgia, they moved to Austin, Texas where their two girls, Kay and Sylvia, were born and raised. Later in life they moved to Round Rock, Texas where they resided until Weldon passed away in 2021. Weldon and Shirley were devoted partners for 64 happy years.

After settling in Austin, Shirley worked for Steck Vaughn Publishing and Sears and Roebuck, but her true passion was caring for her daughters and being involved in all of their activities. She was a wonderful mother, caregiver, supporter and confidant and was loved by all who visited her home. After both girls were grown, Shirley went to work for the University of Texas at Austin. She worked in the Transcripts Office and retired as the Supervisor of the Department in 1997.

Church was always an important part of Shirley's life. She loved the Lord, prayed fervently for her family and friends, and made sure her family was in the pew pretty much any time the doors were open. She was a gracious servant as a Sunday School teacher and Girls in Action leader for many years. At First Baptist Church Round Rock she looked forward to participating in her Ladies Sunday School Class and continued to find joy watching Weldon sing in the choir up until the year he passed away.

Shirley loved her family and supported them in every endeavor. She was always present at her daughters' school events, programs, recitals, and shows. She continued to be present at all her granddaughters' events and then as long as her health allowed, continued to cheer on her great grandchildren at their special events as well.

Shirley is survived by her daughters Sylvia Culler and husband Ralph and Kay Habermehl and husband Paul. She is also survived by six granddaughters: Rachel Mayberry and husband Joe, Ashley Sigafoos and husband Adam, Marsha Dillard and husband Brandon, Sarah Jones and husband Tyler, Kristen Welch and husband Brennan, and Jamie Habermehl; great grandchildren Brooks, Leighton and Case Mayberry, Sophia, Scarlett and Noah Sigafoos, and Townsend Jones. She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon Townsend; great granddaughter, Emerson Beth Jones; sister Loretta Kinsey; brothers Leon Jernigan, Ceward Jernigan, and R.C. Jernigan; and parents Lucious Jernigan and Madie Jernigan Langord and Step Father, Raymond Langford.

Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Round Rock on Friday, September 1st. Visitation will be at 2:00 pm and the celebration of her life will be at 3:00 pm. Graveside service will follow at Salado Cemetery, Salado, Texas.
