George Duffield Dayton was the son of Brooklyn Alderman John Augustus and Adelia M Trowbridge Dayton, born August 18th 1841 at Brooklyn, Kings county, NY, he died January 18th 1900 at 133 N 2nd Street, Brooklyn, interred January 21st 1900, Section 2, Plot 5846 or 5446, Cypress Hills Cemetery, 625 Jamaica Avenue, Brooklyn. During the Civil War he served as Musician in the 159th New York Volunteers Infantry. He married Mary Ann Canty on July 8, 1883 at Brooklyn, she was born in 1863 in County Clare, Ireland and had come to Brooklyn in 1880. She died December 11, 1922 at Brooklyn and was the daughter of Simon and Margaret (Griffen) Canty. She was listed as a bookkeeper working with her daughter Maud at a sporting goods store in 1910 and was also keeping a boarder, August Gossle, while residing at 41st Street in Brooklyn, she and her son Harry were still there in 1920 and Gus was still boarding with them.

George was named after the Rev. George Duffield of Detroit, Michigan, Carlisle, Pennsylvania and NYC. No doubt his parents had heard a stirring sermon by this popular minister and thus George, like many of the day, received his name. George was also a talented boat model builder and was known to donate a model for a charitable cause as well as race them on the lake at the Prospect Park Yacht Club as reported in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Tuesday Evening July 16, 1872. In later years he was a member of Winchester Post G A R, while his wife was a member of the Women's Relief Corps, No. 36 of the G A R. He and Mary Ann had six children, two of whom are known to have died young.
