PVT US ARMY

Homer T. Clements left school in Enterprise, Alabama at 12 years of age to work in his father's grocery store. He later left to work as a clerk in a drug store. He joined the Missionary Baptist Church at age 9, and the choir at age 15. He was a member of the B.Y.P.U. and served as its secretary, often leading in prayers and conducting services.

Homer T. Clements went to war as a private with Company A, 167th Infantry, 42nd Division. He received a promotion to Corporal days before he was hit by shrapnel at the Ourcq River during the Second Battle of the Marne, or Battle of Reims, in France. Four comrades were hit and instantly killed by the same shell, but Homer lived a few minutes more. He reportedly kept firing until he grew too weak to hold his gun and died shortly thereafter.
