Veteran of the Spanish-American War
Jefferson County Journal, "Worth," November 15, 1898, p. 5; Obituary notice of John Wesley Clark (1880-1898), son of Rev. James R. Clark and his wife Johanna Prouty-Clark of Worth, Oswego County, New York.
Another brave son and brother has laid down his life upon his country's altar. John Wesley Clark, son of Rev. James R. and Johanna Clark, was born January 28, 1880 at Natural Bridge, NY where the greater party of his life was spent. But during the past two years he has lived among us where his kind, honest, open-hearted disposition endeared him to all. Last May, when the call for volunteers came, he was among the first to respond to his country's call. He enlisted in the 9th U. S. Infantry at Sacketts Harbor, and was sent to Porto (sic Puerto) Rico. Upon his arrival at that Island he was stricken down with the fever and put on board the steamship Relief which was soon on its way to New York. But just as the boat was coming into New York harbor on the 19th of August John closed his eyes to earthly scenes and entered into the world of light and immortality. He lies at rest in the soldiers' cemetery at Fort Hamilton, Long Island.
