Callaghan enlisted in Co. H, 38th Indiana Infantry on Oct. 20, 1864. He died of typhoid fever on May 9, 1865 at DeCamp Gen'l. Hospital on David's Island, N.Y. Harbor.

Nathaniel was born in 1842 to parents Isaac Callahan (1805-1883) and Jane "Jennie" Boyd (1806-1880). He had the following known siblings: John Thomas (1826-1856), Sarah Elizabeth (b. 1827), Elisha Boyd (1828-1909), Nancy Jane (b. 1830), Sciotha Evans (1831-1899; also served in Co. H, 38TH IND INF), Solomon Frazier (b. 1834), Phoebe Ann (1836-1837), Isaac Martin (1838-1904), William Alexander (b. 1840), Eveline (b. 1844), Henry C. (1846-1906), and Polly A. (1848-1867). He married Miss Emily Phipps.
