He married Elizabeth lnu. and fathered Henry (b. @1846) and John (b. @1848). In 1850, he was living with his family in Conestoga Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but by 1860, was a laborer living alone in West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, at a hotel run by the Kreider family. He stood 5' 10" tall and had black hair and black eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania, June 4, 1861, mustered into federal service at Baltimore, Maryland, July 26 as a private with Co. E, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry), but died from disease in a military hospital in New York.
