Nathaniel H. Bouldin was enlisted by Col. John L. Dillard on 10 July 1861 at Mt. Vernon Church in Henry County, VA. He was serving in the 57th when he was taken prisoner at Gettysburg on 3 July 1863.

When he was paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland, he was transferred to City Point, Virginia on 16 March 1864.
He was captured again at the Battle of Five Forks on 1 April 1865, and was sent to Harts' Island in New York.
He died in DeCamp General Hospital of "chronic diarrhea" and is buried in Grave Number 2677 at Cypress Hills National Cemetery in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.
