Amelia fell in love at the age of 20 with General Sir Charles Fitzroy, one of her father's equerries. Some historians speculate they may have been secretly married, which would have been against the law under the Royal Marriage Act. There is no solid evidence of a marriage. She began exhibiting the early symptoms of tuberculosis in her teens, and by 1810 she also had erysipelas and lived in constant suffering, resigned and uncomplaining. Her elder sister Princess Mary was by her side daily until her death, at Augusta Lodge in Windsor, at the age of 27. Amelia bequeathed most of her possessions to her beloved Fitzroy. Grief triggered her father's final and worst bout of porphyria, which led to his being declared unfit to rule in 1811. Amelia Island, Florida was named in her honor.
