Elijah S. Bartlow entered the three-year service as a Private in Company G of the 21st Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 2 September 1861 at age 22. He died of pyemia (a type of blood poisoning) on April 9, 1865 in hospital on David's Island, New York City Harbor. [Source: Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War Of the Rebellion, 1861-1866, v. III, pp 27 and 700]
The 1889 obituary of Carnelius (sic) Bartlow reported that his sons, Elijah S. and Daniel D., enlisted in "our late rebellion" and that Elijah S. "being fatally wounded died April 9th, 1865...." [Source:Obituary of Carnelius Bartlow, Democratic Northwest (Napoleon, Ohio), 12 September 1889]
