Freeman was the eighth child of Jonathan and Mercy (Memorial # 66053560). His father was a veteran of the Revolutionary War.
Freeman married Sally Rice who passed away on the day their son Seymour was born.

Freeman married Nancy Blade

Freeman served with the 18th NY Cavalry and then transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corp. According to a letter received by his wife, Nancy, he died of consumption in the NY State Soldiers Depot while on his way home from New Orleans. He had seven dollars in his pocket at the time of his death.
Freeman and three sons (Leonard, Seymour, and George) all served in the Civil War
