Fifteenth child of sixteen born to Daniel H. and Mary Horton Burris.

He married Sarah Ann Mason on Dec. 20, 1838 in Hancock Co., IN. Their known children were William Rubin Mason, Jacob Benson, Caroline Rachel, Nancy Jane, Elijah M., Nathan M. C., Mary, Elias LeRoy, Minverva Deborah "Debby", H. Fremont, and Ida Ann.

The 1860 Census in Mount Pleasant, IA lists his occupation as shoemaker.

He was a resident of Henry County, Iowa when he enlisted as a Private on 10 Oct 1861 at age 42. He mustered into Co K 4th Iowa Cavalry on 25 Nov 1861. Promoted to Full Saddler on 27 Nov 1861. Transferred out of Co K and into Regiment US Veteran Reserve Corps on 16 May 1863. On 5 May 1864 he transferred out of Regiment US Veteran Reserve Corps and into Co K 4th Iowa Cavalry. Mustered out of Co K on 4 Dec 1864 at Memphis, TN.
