James Yancey married Romania Amanda Harshman on April 2, 1868, in Iowa prior to moving to Canola (Canola no longer exists but was near the present Grenola, Kansas--two towns Canola and Greenfield, Kansas, combined to make the present town of Grenola, Kansas). James and Romania had 5 children, F. A., Phoebe, John, Charles and James.

The Ambrose Yancey family Bible and also a newspaper clipping of the obituary of James Yancey says, "James Yancey, son of Ambrose and Phebe Yancey was born in Franklin County, Indiana, on February 4, 1844. He removed to Canola, Kansas, in the spring of 1872. He died December 5, 1877 in Canola, Kansas. His funeral sermon was preached by Reverend S. B. Sheeks." An elder family member said that James was killed by a horse. He died at the age of 33 years and 10 months. He had a twin sister, Martha Jane Zickefoose who was married to Western Summers Zickefoose, Civil War Union soldier.
