Jesse Crawford was born April 27, 1784 in North Carolina. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Crawford. He married Hannah Warren on April 24, 1806, in Georgia. Jesse and Hannah lived in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Alabama and Mississippi before moving to the Republic of Texas in 1839. The Crawford family settled in Nacogdoches, San Augustine and Rusk Counties. Jesse and Hannah were legally separated in the 1860's. After the separation, Hannah went to live in Henderson, Texas, where she died in 1866. Jesse lived with Mariah Theresa, Jesse and Hannah's seventh child, and her husband, Archelaus Yancy, until his death on August 12, 1862 and he is buried at the old North Baptist Church in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Mariah inherited the bulk of Jesse's properties and Archeluas was the executor of his will. Legal problems caused the resolution of Jesse's properties to be tied up in numerous court cases for several years.

Jesse Crawford married Hanna Warren on April 24, 1806, in Georgia. Hanna Warren, daughter of William Warren, was born August 31, 1788, in Georgia. Jesse and Hanna Warren Crawford were the parents of twelve children:

Jesse Crawford, the son of James Crawford and Betsy Engald, had been a trader of land and slaves. He was in Georgia on business when he met Hanna Warren. They later married and remained in Georgia for about a year and were there for the birth of their first child. They lived in other states, such as North Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama and, last, Texas. Jesse was in Texas for a short period of time prior to 1830. He is enumerated on the 1830 Census in Marion County, Mississippi. He left, but returned in 1839 and, in 1841, brought his family to Texas.

Jesse Crawford served with the Regiment of Calvary and Mounted Gunmen, Tennessee volunteers, during the War of 1812. He had enlisted on September 24, 1813 and had also served with Capt. Robert Jetton's Company Volunteer Calvary in 1813 and 1814.

Jesse Crawford paid poll taxes in Nacogdoches County, Texas in 1840 through his agent, Ambrose Crain.
He paid taxes in 1845 to 1848 in Nacogdoches County. In 1846, he also paid taxes in Gonzales County on 4,428 acres of land and in Rusk County on 640 acres. The 1846 Census of Texas enumerates Jesse Crawford in Nacogdoches County, Texas. The 1850 Census enumerates him as being a 66-year old farmer born in North Carolina.

The 1860 Census for Nacogdoches County states that Jesse owned 18,213 acres and personal property of 8,155 acres. Jesse Crawford had a will but it was contested. The will, and much information about the will is in the Archives at Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches, Texas.
