Jesse Crawford was born April 27, 1784 in North Carolina. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Crawford. He married Hannah Warren on April 24, 1806, in Georgia. Jesse and Hannah lived in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Alabama and Mississippi before moving to the Republic of Texas in 1839. The Crawford family settled in Nacogdoches, San Augustine and Rusk Counties. Jesse and Hannah were legally separated in the 1860's. After the separation, Hannah went to live in Henderson, Texas, where she died in 1866. Jesse lived with Mariah Theresa, Jesse and Hannah's seventh child, and her husband, Archelaus Yancy, until his death on August 12, 1862 and he is buried at the old North Baptist Church in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Mariah inherited the bulk of Jesse's properties and Archeluas was the executor of his will. Legal problems caused the resolution of Jesse's properties to be tied up in numerous court cases for several years.

He is enumerated on the 1830 Census in Marion County, Mississippi. He left, but returned in 1839 and, in 1841, brought his family to Texas.
