Amon L. Loy was the third of four sons born to William Thomas and Emma Martin (Puckett) Loy. His brothers were Kelley A., Voris Senoris, and Murrell Jonathan Loy. As a child, Amon and his family went to Barnhill Baptist Church Sunday School (less than a mile to walk). The elementary school was about 1/2 mile from his home on the way to Barnhill. When Amon was ready for high school in 1923, his family moved to Enfield, IL. Amon was on the Enfield basketball team. During his senior year, the team went to the Carbondale regional. Articles were written in the Carmi newspaper about it. Amon was 5'7" and was an especially good dribbler. His team played and practiced in the opera house which was the upstairs of a fairly large building. The opera house was also used for vaudeville.

In 1928, Amon graduated from Enfield High School. The family moved to Berwyn, IL, in 9/1928. Amon began Jr. College which was part of the third floor of Morton High School in Cicero, IL. Their home in Berwyn was in a large brick building, four stories high. The Loy family had an apartment on the third floor. The building was located one block from Harlem Avenue. Across Harlem was Riverside suburb, and a block away were railroad tracks and a station in the next block. They moved to East Avenue in 1930. Amon quit Jr. College early--in his second year. Married Alice Adele Bragg who lived close by in 1932. (Information taken from Murrel Loy's memoirs)

Amon Loy, Sr. was an air raid warden during World War II 1942-45 while living on Kalorama St. in South Bend, IN. He was also an usher at Notre Dame football games (in the late 1940's to early 1950's) and got into the games for free. (per Marilyn Loy Clauser oral report on 5-7-05).
