"Lew" was the son of James Day and Ellen McDaniel.

Not much is known at this time about Lew, however, at the time of the 1880 census, he was working as a druggist in Walla Walla. He was in Columbia County in 1889, according to state records. If family lore is accurate, he was in Grant County, Oregon in the early 1890s, and was very ill with "consumption".
