He was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Infantry and instructor in automatic weapons from 1917-1919. He was wounded at Chateau Thierry, France in June 1918. H e was also a professor of economics and business at Grinnell College. He received his A. B. in 1914, A. M. in 1916, and a Ph.D in 1938, from the University of Chicago.
