Gerald Don Curtis was born was born February 6, 1938 in Salt Lake City to Alva and Myreel Potter Curtis. He was the fifth of nine children. He had many friends and was a natural athlete. He served as the ninth-grade president at Granite Park Junior High and graduated from Granite High School lettering in five different sports. He went to BYU on a Football scholarship until he separated his shoulder. He finished his education at the University of Utah, graduating in 1969. Gerald met his future wife, Sally Hutchings, while dancing with the Folk Dancers at the Institute of Religion. They continued to dance for several years after graduating.
Gerald had a strong testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission to Mexico. His mother had died while he was in High School, and his father died while he was serving his mission. He returned and continued his studies while he worked. After graduating from the university, he was a Social Studies teacher in Granite School District for 31 years, teaching most of those years at Bonneville Junior High School.
Jerry and Sally had five children and over the years enjoyed taking a yearly vacation with many adventures to different destinations. Gerald continued his love of sports by playing church ball and always enjoyed a good round of golf for many years. Jerry was a connoisseur of ice cream. He could consume more delicious goodness than anyone. His siblings said he should use a shovel instead of a spoon when eating ice cream. Jerry learned to paint houses from his father as a young man and continued that skill as a side job for years. He eventually delved into oil and watercolor painting and created many beautiful works of art.
Following retirement, Jerry served at the Salt Lake Temple as an ordinance worker for seven years. Then he and Sally served a full-time mission to Nauvoo, IL. Returning from their mission, they continued to serve in many capacities including several years as Hosts in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. Gerald has served continuously throughout his life in many different leadership callings and has always been eager to be of service to those around him. People knew they could always count on him to help when he was needed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Jean, the twins, Gordon, Marilyn, and Gloria.
Survived by his wife, Sally; siblings: Sara Beckstrom and David Curtis, children: Craig (Tree), Brenda, Michael (Audrey), Robert (Andrea), and Andrea (Brandt). He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren: Sydney Aspen Curtis, Forest Jackson Curtis (currently serving in the Philippines), Hailey Cedar Curtis, Bradley Michael Curtis, Katelyn Taya Curtis, Isabella Maurine Curtis, Dylan Curtis Jensen, Charlie Russell Jensen, Oliver Brandt Jensen, and Porter Trey Jensen.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 28, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Memorial Mountain View Mortuary chapel, 3115 East 7800 South, Cottonwood Heights, Utah 84121 Interment will follow at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery.
