No clearly documented ancestors for Earl have been found but Thomas Comstock, born about 1855, who appeared in nearby Ashford, Cattaraugus County, on the 1865 New York state census as the adopted son of James and Maria Goodemote was probably his father. The first husband of Earl's wife Etta was Abraham Goodmote so there appears to be reasonable circumstantial evidence to indicate that Earl was the son of the adopted Thomas Comstock who later went by the name of Thomas Goodremote. Thomas' wife Cora was not old enough to be the mother of Earl so Earls' mother has not been identified.
