The old man Clarence How, otherwise known as 'Old Charlie' who was admitted to the Masterton Hospital some months ago in a condition of senile decay. died on Saturday last. He was buried this morning, the funeral being attended by a number of Masterton friends. The deceased, who has been a familiar figure in Masterton for many years, was well connected at Home, his father being the originator of the publishing company of How and Co. He was seventy five years of age and up to the time of his admittance to the Hospital he lieved alone in a small cottage near the Waipoua river, in Villa-street. He was a very independent, self-reliant disposition; and although for some time he was quite unfit to be alone and on more than one occasion collapsed in the street from sheer physical weakness, he steadfastly refused to go to any charitable institution and when at last he was taken to the Hospital it was much against his will.
