Richlands, Va, June 13. - While Mrs E B Gilliam and Mrs W J Lewis stood on the banks of the rushing Clinch river this afternoon and watched them, E B Gilliam and W J Lewis lost their lives in the water while making a heroic but unavailing effort to save the lives of John A Lewis and his friend and guest, M S Bowers, two 12-year-old boys, who were trying to swim.
Mr Gilliam was formerly proprietor of a hotel at Pearisburg and came to Raven as general manager two years ago. He was a man well thought of by the entire community. W J Lewis was a contractor at the mines at Raven, and the son of M S Bowers was the 12-year-old nephew of Gilliam, of Mabscott, W Va.
Lewis was a brother-in-law of Gilliam. The boys went in bathing and were caught in a whirlpool. Gilliam and Lewis went to their rescue. All the bodies were brought to Raven on a local train. The accident happened one mile below Raven. The adults had been enjoying the day fishing and the picnic party was turned into a funeral party in the twinkling of an eye.
