Col. (USA, Ret) Frederick French Irving died August 5, 2023. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on June 24, 1929 to then Captain and Mrs. Frederick A. Irving. He grew up attending schools on Army posts including Ft. Benning and West Point.

At the time of Pearl Harbor his father was Commandant of Cadets at West Point and was reassigned immediately to take command of the 24th Infantry Division in Hawaii, which he led for three years in campaigns from Hollandia to Leyte. To ensure educational continuity his parents sent him to Kent School, Kent, CT, from which he graduated in 1947 and entered West Point. He graduated in 1951 and was handed his diploma by his father who was then Maj Gen and Superintendent.

He married Alice Torrey Blue at St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church in NYC in 1952. Then stationed in Germany during the Cold War, he commanded tank companies. Upon transferring to the Corps of Engineers, he subsequently attended Princeton University to receive a Master of Engineering degree. His following assignments were as an operations officer for the Army Polar R&D Center Camp Century in Greenland, a lead project engineer for building the first Saturn launch complex 34 at Cape Canaveral for the Mercury and Gemni space programs, Commander of the 317th Combat Engineer Battalion in Germany, Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV), office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army, and Assistant Director of Civil Works for the Atlantic coast in the office of the Army Chief of Engineers.

Upon retiring from the Army after twenty-two years, he and his wife moved to Jacksonville where he held the position of Vice President for land development with Stockton Whatley & Davin. Following that, he was President of Riverside Restorations Inc., which developed real estate and managed properties.

He was a member of the West Side Rotary, the Chevy Chase Club, the Ponte Vedra Club, the Florida Yacht Club, and St. Mark's Episcopal Church and served as President of West Point Society of North Florida.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, and his children, Alice Torrey Irving Shuford (David), Cynthia Irving Bowles (Gene) and Frederick F. Irving, Jr. (Barbara), and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Internment will be at West Point at a future date.
