John Breckenridge Swann was the son of William Cook Swann and Margaret Elizabeth Parks. He married Mary Alice Key and they had 12 children (9 girls and 3 boys) Gillum died in infancy. They also helped raise 4 grandchildren when their daughters husband died at a young age. In all, 15 children grew up in their home. He was a farmer and owned a farm near Lynn Grove known as Pidgeon Roost Farm. He was also interested in politics and helped organize the Kentucky Dark Fired Tobacco Association. He served as magistrate for many years.

He had a great love of music and taught in singing schools. He lead the singing at Sinking Springs Church for many years.
