EM3 US NAVY WORLD WAR II

BOURBON -- Donald E. Bachtel, 82, of Bourbon, formerly of Lakeville and Lapaz, died at 3:06 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 1, 2006) at Goshen General Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born Jan. 26, 1924, in Lapaz, to John Walter and Mary Alma (Baughman) Bachtel. He married Marie Carey on Oct. 19, 1947, in Lakeville.

She survives, in Argos, along with two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Bachtel of Bourbon and Rebecca (Paul) Phillips of Argos; a son, William J. Bachtel of Middlebury; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Margaret (Ben) Smith and Marilyn (Wayne) Ayres, both of Plymouth, Dorothy (William) Spier of South Bend and Sharon (Richard) Scott of Lapaz; and three brothers, Carl (Patricia) Bachtel of Walkerton, Harold (Phyllis) Bachtel of Inwood and David (Margaret) Bachtel of Lapaz; and two brothers-in-law, Charles Kovach of Mishawaka and Roger Disher of Florida.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Norma Bachtel, Esther Kovach and Glenna Disher. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home, 314 S. Michigan St., Lakeville, where services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. Military graveside services and burial will follow at Fair Cemetery, North Liberty.

As a youngster, Mr. Bechtel worked in the fields, picking mint. He also loaded coal in engines on the railroad at the Lapaz elevator. He formerly was employed with Bourbon Silo Co. and Bremen Castings, and was self-employed in farming and the dairy business most of his life. He also worked in the factory at Wells Aluminum, North Liberty, from retiring after 20 years. During World War II, Mr. Bachtel served as an electrician in the U.S. Navy submarine service in the Pacific corridor.
