US Congressman. An 1810 graduate of Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, he went on to study at the Litchfield Law School in Connecticut, and became an attorney with a practice in Charles County, Maryland. He enlisted in the United States Army when the War of 1812 began, and served as Major and Aide-de-Camp to Major General Philip Steuart during the conflict. After the war he was elected to the Maryland State Legislature, serving in 1815, 1816 and 1820. An ardent supporter of Andrew Jackson, in 1832 he was elected as a Jacksonian Democrat to represent Maryland's 8th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. He served a single term from 1833 to 1835, having lost his bid for re-election to Whig Daniel Jenifer (whom Stoddert defeated in 1832 for the seat). He returned to his Charles County West Hatton estate " Wicomico House", where he spent the balance of his life practicing law and farming. He briefly returned to public service in 1867 to participate in Maryland's State Constitution Convention, and passed away at his home in 1870. He was the cousin of Benjamin Stoddert, the first United States Secretary of the Navy, and the grand-nephew of Revolutionary War General and Maryland Governor William Smallwood. His date of birth is recorded in a 3 May 1803 Charles County Orphan's Court record as 28 October 1790.
