Memorial to Lieutenant Arthur Donald Dundas Carter, 2nd Battalion, 4th Gurkha Rifles. He was the elder son of Roderick Edmond Carter (formerly of the Public Works Department, Bengal, India) and Mary Ursula Carter (daughter of Donald William Dundas and Harriet Selina Wollen) of Waratilla, Wimborne Road, Bournemouth. Born and baptised on 14 Oct 1888 in Arrah, Bengal (now Bihar), India. Educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Indian Army (unattached list) as a 2nd Lieutenant on 9 Sep 1908. Was attached to the Shropshire Light Infantry for his probationary year until he joined the 2nd Battalion 4th Gurkha Rifles on 27 Nov 1909. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 9 Dec 1910. He served in the Abor Expedition in 1913. He was deployed to France near the start of WW1 with the 1st Battalion of his regiment, leaving India on 24 Aug 1914 as part of 9th (Sirhind) Brigade, the 3rd (Lahore) Division, Indian Corps, to form part of Indian Expeditionary Force A, to reinforce British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in France. The battalion arrived at Marseilles from Egypt on 30 Nov 1914, and was hurriedly deployed to the front in December 1914. They fought in the battles of Givenchy (18-22 Dec 1914), Neuve Chapelle (10–13 Mar 1915) and the Second Battle of Ypres (22 Apr – 15 May 1915). Lieutenant Carter was accidentally killed near Merville, France on 20 Jul 1915 by the explosion of a bomb while instructing his men. He was buried in Merville Communal Cemetery, Merville, Departement du Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.
