Wife/Widow of John Cogswell III and mother of all 9 of his children.

Margaret was named after her mother Margaret (Temple) Gifford (1625-1724). Her mother and father Dr. John Gifford were married in London, England in August of 1650. They came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony a year later and settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Margaret and her 6 younger brothers were all born in Ipswich.

While initially living in Ipswich, Massachusetts Margaret's parents eventually lived in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. Margaret's mother Margaret was among those accused of being a witch during the Spring of 1693 during the climax of the Salem Witch Trial hysteria. Initially, in 1692, the accusations and executions of the Witch Trials were of poor, disadvantaged, people with little means to defend themselves. As the hysteria grew and eventually reached a fever pitch accusations started targeting wealthier more prominent women including Margaret (Temple) Gifford. By this point many ignored the summons as did Margaret. Once the Governor's wife became among the accused, in May 1693, the Governor William Phipps put a screeching halt to the whole disgraceful debacle.

Young Margaret, herself, married John Cogswell III on July 22, 1674. The marriage produced 9 children. The children are as follows:

- Margaret (Cogswell) Hawkes (1675-1748) wife of Moses Hawkes with whom she had 5 children.
- Elizabeth (Cogswell) Hawkes (1677-1718) m. Ebenezer Hawkes - 4 children.
- Gifford Cogswell (1679-1752) m. Sarah Parsons - 4 daughters.
- Sarah (Cogswell) Hawkes (b. 1681) married the widower of her elder sister Elizabeth - Ebenezer Hawkes. No children from this union.
- John Cogswell IV (1683-1719) m. Sarah Browne - 4 children.
- Mary (Cogwell) Perkins (1685-1727) m. Jacob Perkins, Sr. - 2 children.
- Bethany (Cogswell) Gott (1687-1755) m. Samuel Gott - 4 children.
- Susannah (Cogswell) Parsons (b. 1691) m. Jeremiah Parsons - 4 children.
- Samuel Cogswell (b. 1693) m. Mary Lufkin - 6 children.

Margaret lived to be 95, a rare occurrence in Colonial times. She outlived a number of her own children. Her mother Margaret Gifford also lived to be in her nineties, living to be 99.
