He met his lovely wife, Joyce, in the first grade and they were together throughout all grades and started dating in high school. After attending college for a few years, they were married for time and all eternity on August 16, 1968, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
Carlan worked most of his life in engineering. He was a project engineer at the INL helping solve problems associated with Nuclear Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Management.
On July 28, 1973, the love of their lives was born, Andrea Jill Mullen. Andrea was born with Spina Bifida and required intense around-the-clock care from her parents. Her life became a refining experience in their lives. She and her dad had a very special bond. He was often greeted with a tender "Hello, Carlo" after a long day's work which always put a smile on his face. Carlan was an outstanding father who spent many hours attending to the special needs Andrea required. He made sure she knew how much he loved her, and she never went without. After many years of health struggles, she returned home to her Heavenly Father on May 13, 1995.
Eleven years after Andrea's passing, they were blessed with a "Bonus Family," Kara and Doug Purcell. Since then, Carlan and Joyce welcomed five grandchildren and received the new title of Grampie and Grammie. Together they have created and will continue to create many experiences of unending happiness.
Carlan had pure faith in Jesus Christ and His plan for eternal progression and happiness. He held many callings throughout his faithful life including 1st councilor in the Kearney Bishopric, high councilman, stake finance clerk, and high priest group leader. Out of all the callings held, serving alongside his wife as Baptistry Coordinators in the Idaho Falls Temple for 9.5 years was his favorite. Carlan was exemplary at helping the one. He could always recognize the strengths of another and would always offer words of strength and encouragement.
Carlan had many hobbies including hunting, fishing, restoring cars, and especially camping with his family and grandsons. He developed many perfected skills in furniture making, auto restoration, and welding. He took great pride in his restored 1958 Chevy and his grandfather's 1946 Pontiac. He was a builder and improver.
Last Monday evening Carlan received his greatest birthday gift of being reunited with his beloved eternal daughter Andrea.
The family wishes to thank all the family, friends, Kearney Ward members, Dr. Brad Erikson, and Brio Home Health and Hospice, especially Angula, Cassie, Justin, and Marisa for all their special love and support during this difficult time.
