Before he was married to Lucinda Ann (Dempsey), P had a relationship with Lucinda's first cousin Mary Anne (Starr-Dempsey) Coleman while Mary Anne was married to John B. Coleman. P was shot and drowned while crossing the Tug River after visiting Mary Anne who was the mother of his daughter Susan "Susie" (Coleman-Preston) Maynard. According to his granddaughter Lois Ann (Preston) Endicott Booth, P was buried in a cemetery in Kermit, West Virginia.
