The Missouri Telegraph:
INFIRMARY INMATE FOUND DEAD SUNDAY:
Body of Howard Cook Gray Discovered Face Downward On Elley Farm: Walked Off March 12.
Evidently Died Same Night Of Exposure During Heavy Snow Storm:

Howard Cook Gray, 43 years old, an inmate of the County Infirmary at Hams Prairie for about two and a half years, who disappeared March 12, was found dead in a wooded section on the Harry Elley farm, three miles west of Mokane at 8:30 o'clock Sunday morning. The discovery was made by Marion Glover who had gone to Middle River to fish.

He was lying face downward and there was no indication of a struggle. County officials called to the scene soon after the body was found and there were no signs of violence. It being evident that the man had become tired and died of exposure.

Prosecuting Attorney T. Ancel Faucett, Coroner R.G. Hall, Sheriff Hartley Crowson and Deputy J.C. (Pete) Owens were the officials who investigated the death of Mr. Gray and Coroner Hall ruled that he had died of exposure.

Mr. Gray walked away from the infirmary at about 1:30 o'clock on the afternoon of March 12. Several hours after his disappearance the heavy snow of that afternoon and night began to fall and undoubtedly served to make the going much heavier for Gray, who was only in fair physical condition.

Mr. Gray evidently was on his way to his former home between Guthrie and New Bloomfield.

Son of Jack and Fannie Gray.
