He was the son of George Hairgrove and Elizabeth Adams Hairgrove, and was the husband of Sarah Johnston Hairgrove.

He was a survivor of the Marais des Cygnes Massacre.

He later became Sheriff of Linn County, Kansas.

It is said that he considered John Brown one of his staunchest friends.
