William Orton 'Will' Harriman (called 'Willie' as a child) was born on his parents' farm near Christie, Clark County, Wisconsin on February 16, 1880. He was the youngest of five children of Albert Marshall Harriman (9 Feb 1838 – Oct 1931), who was born at Clinton, Kennebec County, Maine; and Seville Duana (Barott) Harriman (11 Oct 1843 – 23 Oct 1925), who was born near Volney, Oswego County, New York. His parents married in Wisconsin in January 1860. His father enlisted in the Union Army in April 1861 and served during the U.S. Civil War. He mustered in to Company G, 3rd Regiment, Maine Infantry on June 4, 1861. His Regiment was part of General Heintzelman's Third Division. He took part in five battles, including First Bull Run, Yorktown, and Williamsburg, and was discharged for disability in December 1862. During her husband's time in service, Seville Harriman returned to her father's home in New York. After Albert's discharge from the service, he and Seville moved to Dodge County, Wisconsin; and later to Blue Earth County, Minnesota. They moved from Minnesota to Clark County, Wisconsin about 1874, and lived on a farm near Christie, Wisconsin. Later they lived on South Grand Avenue in Neillsville, Wisconsin.

During that time he and his family resided at Lakeview, Oregon. Here is an excerpt from History of the Fremont National Forest, Chapter 6:
"Mr. Harriman has discharged successfully the numerous responsibilities which confront a forest supervisor, but his outstanding accomplishment is the progress made in obtaining selective logging practices on the private lands within the Fremont Forest."

He had worked during the day on his fruit farm, and told his wife he was going to take a bath. When he did not return, she found him lying dead on the bed.
