Evelyn King-Pascarella of Staten Island, NY passed peacefully in her sleep September 23, 2007 at the age of 80.

She was born to immigrant parents William King of Ireland and Hannah (nee Hannula) of Norway on February 13, 1927. My grandmother was the last of 17 children. There were 13 boys and 4 girls. Her parents and siblings had preceded her in death.

This is the story of my Maternal Grandmother. I was her first granddaughter, so I got to benefit with her for a long time. She was certainly the rock of our family and was a great inspiration of strength. Always to teach us gals in the family to be strong and independent.

A Mother, Grandmother, and Sister, she was especially a friend to everyone. Truly a very giving person who never hesitated to take care of everyone she knew, even people she would meet on the street for the first time. If they were hungry, she fed them and if need be, she would give her very last dime to help them out. My Grandmother was always a caretaker, it was in her blood. She was certainly a generous loving soul.

Being the fact that I was her eldest granddaughter, I was fortunate enough to be in the kitchen with her when I was a kid when Grandma use to bake up a storm for the holidays. Especially making her mother's famous Norwegian cookie recipe. I'm proud to say I still carry on that tradition of making that cookie every holiday and am the only one with the recipe.

If anything, my grandmother adored and lived for her grandchildren. She made every single one of us feel like we were special.

It was at her wake that her youngest child Roseahanna, who took her passing very hard, spoke of such incredible beautiful words for her mother. My aunt Rosehanna also read a very touching tribute written by her eldest daughter Marie Elizabeth.

A Poem to my Nan, By Marie Lavelle-Boyle

I had a wonderful Nan,
One who never really grew old;
Her smile was made of sunshine,
Her heart was solid gold;

Her eyes were as bright as shining stars,
And in her cheeks fair roses you see.
I had a wonderful Nan,
And to me, that's the way it will always be.

But let it be known,
She's still keeping an eye on all of us,
So let's make sure
She will like what she sees.

I Love you, Nan!
