He married Dorothy Koennecke on September 12th, 1959 in the Edison Street Methodist Church, Fredericksburg
Vernon was an avid baseball player. He played catcher and pitcher for several teams and was also known for hitting homeruns for the ladies. He even said he hit one homerun so far that it was the reason the cow jumped over the moon.
Vernon worked for National Wholesale Grocery for 33 years. He started as a truck driver and later became a top salesman for the company. He was a hard worker who believed strongly in making sure his family was taken care of, even if that meant working through painful injuries. He later worked for various other companies, including the Fredericksburg Independent School District.
