Mr. Murphy died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, from injuries received in a two-car accident near Maryville, Mo.
He was born June 24, 1955, in Camden, Ark., the son of Cleveland Sr. and Frankie (Smith) Murphy.
He had attended DeVry Institute, Anaheim, Calif., and moved to Lawrence in 1993 from Camden, Ark.
Mr. Murphy had served in the U.S. Army, and worked as a computer engineer in Kansas and Missouri for Catalina Marketing, St. Petersburg, Fla.
He was a member of NAACP. He was the third vice president for Kansas State Conference, and had been president of the Lawrence chapter.
He married Rebecca Newman on Dec. 1, 1982, in Lake Tahoe, Calif. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include three son, Marcus J. II, Brian M. and Ryan D., all of the home; his mother, Frankie Murphy Stone, Leavenworth; a brother, Cleveland Jr., El Cajon,
Calif.; and a sister, Brenda Highsmith, Leavenworth.
