Willard was the son of Guy Earl and Minnie Boone Ingersoll. His father was career Army, and stationed at Fort Bliss when Willard was born. It is likely that his parents met in El Paso where Guy wa stationed, and where Minnie was teaching, possibly in one of the "Indian Schools." Willard was named for his paternal grandfather, Willard Bowman Ingersoll in spite of his mother's wishes that he be named Willard Boone Ingersoll.

Willard's parents split early in the marriage, and Willard and Minnie were in Los Angeles, CA by the time he was about six. Willard was reared as an only child of a single, school teacher mother. He finished Hollywood High in 1936 at the age of 16, evidently having skipped a grade or two.

Willard married Helen Bernice True when they were both 21. They had one daughter, Geraldine Frances, before the marriage ended. Willard then married Frances Ida Kralowetz in 1944 and they had two sons, Gary Clark and William Robert. That marriage ended in 1961. Willard later married at least a third time.

Willard was in sales of different kinds, mostly real estate. He was handsome, charming and very bright. He was also a serious alcoholic and a chain smoker. Willard beat the alcohol, but not smoking. He died of congestive heart failure or stroke due to emphysema the spring after he turned 60.

Willard was a ggg grandson of Col. Daniel Boone, the Frontiersman.
