Altamont Donaldson, Sr., along with his father and five brothers, served in the American Revolution. He was the son of John Danielson and Ruth Blodgett and the husband of Anna W. Richards. He was a private in Capt. John Carpenter's Company of Springfield, Massachusetts Line and fought at Saratoga. In 1792 Altamont and his young family moved from Brimfield, MA, to Otsego Co, NY. His parents and several of his siblings also moved to Otsego County. In the 1800 Census for Butternuts, Otsego, NY, Altamont Danielson/Donaldson was shown living there near his father and brothers. He is listed as having three sons aged 0-10. All the evidence suggests that those three sons were Richard, Altamont, Jr. and Frederick. In 1810 Altamont was still living in Otsego County, NY. In 1820 and 1830, according to the U.S. Census he was in Virgil, Cortland County, NY. Altamont's wife Anna died 1830 in Cortland, NY. In the 1840 Census he is shown living (under the 'Donaldson' form of the name), in Oakland County, Michigan.
In the 1830's Altamont, along with nearly all of his brothers, nephews and cousins, changed the family surname from 'Danielson' to 'Donaldson,' believing 'Donaldson' to be the original family name back in 1600's Scotland.
According to the gravestone Altamont was born Nov. 13, 1763. However, 'Vital Records of Brimfield, Massachusetts to the Year 1850,' pub. by New England Historic Genealogical Society, gives the birth date as Nov. 13, 1762.
Altamont's grave was marked by the Genesee Chapter of the D. A. R. of Flint, MI, in June, 1915. In 1971 Michigan genealogists Janice A. Beebe and E. Eileen Edinger Roddy found Altamont's gravestone fallen and broken. Considerable effort was made by volunteers to create a new and beautiful memorial!
Note: The name 'Altamont' means 'High Mountain.'
