A maternal great uncle of mine was George Schuchmann (born Georg Phillipp Gottlob Schuchmann). George was born in 1861 in the St Sebald German Colony in Clayton County, Iowa. George left home some time between 1880 and 1885 and was listed as living with Henry and Ida Rose (Krieg) Ochsner & family on the 1885 Iowa State Census for Volga City, Iowa.

George was listed as a wagon maker on the census, and Henry as a blacksmith. It appears to me that George may have been learning the blacksmithing trade from Henry as a type of apprentice. By or about 1889 George went into business for himself in Volga City and brought his younger brother, John into the business with him. Their business was listed as a wagon repair business in the town.

Both George and John died in a horrific accident in 1898 while attempting to bring heavy farming equipment over a bridge just outside of Volga City. The bridge collapsed while they were on it and their equipment plummeted through the floor of the bridge pinning both of them under the wreckage. George's and John's death resulted in two widowed spouses and 9 orphaned children.

I don't know if you ever came accross that story of the Schuchmann brothers but it has been retold in our family over the generations. I just thought you might be interested in their connection with your ancestor, Henry. If you come accross any information on Henry's business in Volga City please let me know.

Best wishes,
