MRS. MITCHELL DIES AT 83 AFTER ILLNESS
Mrs. Robert H. Mitchell, great-granddaughter of Col. Robert Love, founder of Waynesville, died Thursday night following a short illness. She was 83 years of age.
Born April 18, 1870, Mrs. Mitchell was the former Miss Maria Love, oldest of eight children of Captain Mathew and Rebecca Moore Love of Haywood County. She was graduated from the old Asheville Female College and was married November 4, 1896, to Robert Harris Mitchell of Knoxville, Tennessee. Mr. Mitchell died in 1911.
Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the First Methodist Church and was a charter member and past regent of the Dorcas Bell Love Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
During the years following World War I when the army rehabilitation hospital was located at the Sulphur Springs Hotel, Mrs. Mitchell gave unlimited time and effort in entertaining the patients. One of her projects was to hold open house for the soldiers in her home every Sunday afternoon.
The funeral service was held Saturday afternoon in the First Methodist Church with the Rev. Earl H. Brendall, pastor, and the Rev. Edgar H. Goold, rector of Grace Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment was in Green Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dr. Thomas Stringfield, Dr. James K. Stringfield, James R. Thomas, Clyde H. Ray, Ben J. Sloan, Joe Jack Atkins, and Robert C. Hall.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Janie Love Mitchell Taliaferro of Waynesville, two sons, Robert H. Mitchell, Jr., and Harry Marshall Mitchell, both of Newport News, Va.; and two grandchildren.
Also three sisters, Mrs. Hunter McGuire of Winchester, Va., Mrs. J. F. Abel of Waynesville, and Mrs. Gerald West of Marietta, Ga.
Arrangements were under the direction of Garrett Funeral Home.
