A West Nassau High School cheerleader, homecoming court member and 11th-grade pageant queen died Monday morning in a single-car accident in Baxley, Ga.

Brooke Dover, 17, of Callahan was one of three teenagers killed in the crash. On her way back to Nassau County from visiting a friend, she was sitting in the back seat of a car driven by Appling County, Ga., resident Joshua C. Melton, 18. Appling resident Liana D. Sutton, 17, whom Dover had been visiting, was sitting in the front passenger seat.

All three died at the scene, Nassau County Sheriff Tommy Seagraves said.

Seagraves said Melton was driving on Ten Mile Road in Baxley about 5:50 a.m. when the car ran off the road, hit several trees and ended up on its side. The Georgia Highway Patrol didn't know what caused the accident and still was investigating, he said.

It isn't known if the three were wearing seat belts.

Candace Hicken, West Nassau High softball coach and Dover's science teacher, said the teen's death is a devastating loss.

"She'll never realize how many lives she influenced," Hicken said. "She's such a beautiful girl, and she had a great personality. What a loss."

Sharyl Wood, director of administrative services for the Nassau County school system, said grief counselors, youth ministers and psychologists were in place at West Nassau High School before an intercom announcement Monday notifying students of the accident.

West Nassau High Principal Ron Booker estimated 100 students went home after the announcement, Wood said.

"Apparently this young lady was a very popular and well-liked student," Wood said. "Of course, that was extremely difficult for the student body."
