Velma J. English, 94, died Thursday (March 30, 3006) at Newton Presbyterian Manor.
She was born March 15, 1912, to Gabriel E. and Beulah M. (Erdman) Starr in Newton. They preceded her in death. She married David English June 5, 1932, in Newton. He preceded her in death.

Velma was a member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton. She enjoyed sewing and knitting. Velma also enjoyed music and especially enjoyed playing her portable keyboard.

Survivors include: sons, Vere and Beverly English and Norval English, all of Newton, and Darrel and Yvonne English of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a sister, Willa Strattan of Newton; grandchildren, Norma Jean English, Jolene Cox, Darla Outcalt, Darren English, Melanie Kurmes and Todd English; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by: a sister, Regina Esau; and brothers, Solon Starr and Erdman Starr.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday with family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Phil Fischer of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church officiating.
