Betty Jean Carmichael, 91, of Granbury, passed away on Monday morning, June 19, 2023 in Granbury.

Visitation will begin at 10 A.M., on Thursday, June 22, at the Wiley Center, 420 Highway 377 East, in Granbury. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 11 A.M., Thursday, at the Wiley Center. Committal will take place Thursday afternoon at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro, Texas.

Jean grew up in a small country family in Aquilla, Texas, near the Brazos River. She played basketball at Aquilla High School. As a young adult she married Ernie Wilson and spent thirty years, primarily in the rich countryside of Indiana, raising a family and living the life of successful farmers. Jean was a true co-worker who did not hesitate to participate in the physicality of farming. After Ernie died, Jean returned to Hill County, Texas, helping care for her mother and brother. In 1988 Jean married Alvin Carmichael and spent 24+ happy years with him until his death in 2012. At first they traveled and later they relaxed in great contentment at their home in Pecan Plantation. Jean worked at the Texas Farm Bureau, broadcasted farm news on the radio for KHBR Hillsboro and WBAP Fort Worth, and marched in Washington, D.C., on behalf of farmers. Later in life she worked in real estate, a dress shop, and as a tourism director. Although she served on the Whitney, Texas, City Council, she spent most years from 1991 in the Granbury area. In 1999 she took up oil painting and became a regionally acclaimed artist, particularly of bluebonnet landscapes. Jean was a Christian and member of the Methodist Church, with a sensitivity to other people and to nature. She took the time to talk with other folks and was attuned to flowers and birds and the history of the beautiful places she painted.

Jean is survived by her son, Nathan Wilson of North Carolina; grandchildren, Amanda Parsons of Rutherfordton, North Carolina and Dominique Simmons of Warsaw, Indiana; great-grandchildren, Simon Carter, Alice Carter, Matilda Carter, Lucinda Carter, and Angel Simmons; step-children, Charles (Kathy) Carmichael of Granbury, Dwight Carmichael of Dallas, Dodd (Sonda) Carmichael of Bynum, Texas, Ed (Margie) Donahue of Fulshear, Texas; step-grandchildren, Leigh Carmichael of Granbury, Colt Carmichael of Goldthwaite, Texas, Nolan Carmichael of Bynum, Texas, Jordan Colbaugh of Lorena, Texas, Jed Donahue of Houston, and Tyler Donahue of Austin; Step great-grandchildren, Cambree Carmichael, Colbee Carmichael, Cannon Carmichael, Tyce Colbaugh, Jett Colbaugh, Hayes Colbaugh, Briggs Colbaugh, and Avery Donahue.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husbands, Ernest "Ernie" Wilson and Alvin Carmichael; by her daughter, Sylvia Simmons; and by her brother, Billy Tyra;
