He was raised and worked on the family farm owned by his mother and father. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 during World War II. During his time in the Marines, he was stationed in Guam, China, and fought in Okinawa where he saw combat and was wounded. Lloyd was honorably discharged at the end of the war. After his service, he moved to California where he met the love of his life, Betty. They started a family and had three children, while in Columbia and Chinese Camp. They were married for 45 years before her death in 2003. Lloyd was working for Sonora Aggregates as a foreman when he retired. He was a member of the Chinese Camp school board, and later in life he worked at Chicken Ranch Bingo and volunteered for the sheriff’s station, where he was loved and adored by his peers. His passions in life were his family and fishing. He loved his kids, his grandkids, and his great-grandkids, especially when taking them fishing. Lloyd loved to tell jokes and was fun to be around. One of his favorite sayings was “Today I caught a fish so big I took a picture of it and the picture weighed 10 pounds.” He can always make you smile even when you were down and skies were dark. He was our rock, a great man, and he will never be forgotten.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, Cora Ella and Lillburn Green George; his wife, Betty; his sister, Ruby; and his four brothers, Homer, Lester, Jack and Dave.
He is survived by his children, Joe Paul George, of Phoenix, Arizona, Beverly George, of Sonora, Ronald Steven George, of Sonora, and Charlotte DeVoto, of Sonora; his grandchildren, Joe Spahn, of Coulterville, Marvin DeVoto, of Tracy, Nathin George, of Sonora; and six great-grandchildren, Jesse Spahn, Westley Spahn, Bryce DeVoto, Kaidin DeVoto, Landon George and Brenton George.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 4 at the Chinese Camp Cemetery.
