Richard D. Allen. Age 85 of Edina. Born on the family farm in Byron, one of the "Allen boys," was defined by his roles as devoted lawyer and family man. Dick graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School. He began his career trying cases as a First Lieutenant in the JAG division of the Air Force, then returned to Minneapolis to join a large firm. He later established a diverse corporate solo practice over 50 years. Work and family life were always intertwined, as he championed his clients' causes around the clock. As a solo practitioner, he helped revised the MN Rules of Civil Procedure, oversaw complex corporate mergers and showed profound concern for justice and the people behind the cases. He gave legal advice until his last waking hour. He was admitted to the U.S. District Court and U.S. Court of Military Appeals and was a MSBA.

Survived by his wife of 57 years Sue Ann Maris Allen; children Melisssa, Christopher (Rebecca) and Maris Allen Venable(Stephen), brothers Bill (Donnis)and Jim (Elaine) grandchildren William and Henry Venable.

Preceded in death by parents John S. Allen, Sr. and Anna Bird Vail and brothers John S. Allen, Jr.(Marge) and Phillip.

A celebration of Dick's life will be held on Saturday August 15at 10 am at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1917 Logan Ave. South, Mpls. A reception follows in the Undercroft. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Our Lady of Peace Hospice of St. Paul, Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center, or Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis, c/o Deikel Transportation Services.
