US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1822 and commenced law practice in Winchester, Virginia. He was a member of the State Assembly in 1823, 1824, 1832 to 1835 and 1839. In 1841, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress, serving until 1843. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed legal practice until his death on his Springdale Estate.
