Barbara Bailey Hess, 83, died on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at South Davis Community Hospital in Bountiful, UT of congestive heart failure. She resided at 468 North "J" Street (730 East) in The Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah at the time of her death.

Barbara Jean or simply "Barbara" on her birth certificate was born to Kenneth W. Bailey and Madge Thomas on April 7, 1924 in Provo, UT.

Barbara attended Provo schools: Maeser Elementary, Dixon Jr. High, Provo High, and then Brigham Young University for two years, studying English literature. She was granted a scholarship one year.

Barbara loved learning and was a student of the arts and social sciences all of her life, but her heart was ever with the great literary works she studied while at BYU.

When Barbara was 21, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she met Marvin G. Hess at a Mutual dance in a Mormon ward. Marvin was in the Marine Corps, stationed in Washington, D.C., and working in a navel gun factory. They were married a year later on February 7, 1946.

Barbara worked at First Security Bank for several years. It was clear to those who knew or worked with her that she was a perfectionist and a woman ahead of her time with a business acumen that would have allowed her to excel should she have followed a career path. Instead, she and Marvin raised two children: Eric in 1956 and Laura in 1958.

Barbara chose to stay home and raise her family. Barbara was a wonderful mother, a "helicopter" mom, always hovering, always making sure her children's detailed needs were met.

She was so proud of Eric and Laura and in her glory when surrounded by her children and eventually her three gorgeous granddaughters: Melissa, Kirsten, and Sabrina. Her little family was all in all.

Barbara and Marvin enjoyed a busy community life. Together, they were involved in University of Utah athletics, where Marvin was head track and wrestling coach spanning over thirty years.

They attended Ute football and basketball games with 50-yard-line or center court seats. They spent springs and summers at the Salt Lake Swimming and Tennis Club -where Marvin taught swimming - or golfing and playing tennis together and with friends.

Barbara was especially proud of a hole in one, which she never let anyone forget. She played bridge with her close friends for thirty years and with them attended cultural and literary events. She especially loved Utah Opera. She and Marvin gardened together at Marv's parents' home in Farmington, always proud of each season's crops.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Marvin; her daughter, Laura (Kevin) Hess Jenkins; three granddaughters: Melissa (Josh) Jensen Quai, Kirsten, and Sabrina Jensen; grandson Jared (Krista) Jenkins, and great-grandchildren, Jayden and Isabelle Jenkins. She is preceded in death by her parents, her son Eric, and her brother, Richard.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 12:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Street, Salt Lake City, UT. A visitation will be held prior to the services from 10:30 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. at Larkin Mortuary.
Interment will be held in the Farmington City Cemetery at 3:30 p.m.
