Walter H. (Walt) Koontz III, 75, formerly of Sedan, died July 3, 2023, at his home in Winfield. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 22 at 10 a.m. at the Sedan United Methodist Church, 306 N. Chautauqua St. Walt's body has been donated to the Kansas University Medical Center for research on Glioblastoma brain cancer. No graveside service is planned at this time.
Born May 6, 1948, at Stafford, Kan., he was the son of Walter H. (Jr.) and Mary Isabel (Bartlett) Koontz. He was raised in Stafford and was a 1966 graduate of Stafford High School, attended Kansas State University and earned his bachelor's degree from Southwestern College in 1971. He completed his master's degree in 1987 from Pittsburg State University.
Walt entered the U.S. Army in 1971 and was also a member of the Kansas National Guard and Army Reserves until 1977. He was awarded the Sharpshooter Award while serving in the military.
He and Sharon Meyer were married on July 3, 1970, at the Atlanta Christian Church, Atlanta, Kan., and made their first home in Stafford, then moved to Winfield followed by Sedan in 1972 where he served in the education field for many years. Walt and Sharon had recently moved back to Winfield.
While being employed by the USD 286 Sedan school district, Walt served as a social studies/history teacher, junior high boys' football, basketball and track coach, junior high counselor and started and coached the high school girls' softball program in 1989. He also taught at Independence Community College.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church where he served on most of the church committees including working at the Sedan United Methodist Church fair stand for over 45 years which provided scholarships for many students through the years. He was also active in Eagle Scouts/Boy Scouts, school music groups and a rock band, "Only Us." Other civic and educational involvements included Sigma Nu Fraternity, Sedan Recreation director and sole instructor, SCBL Counseling Group, Kansas Counselors Association and Greenbush Coop Counseling Committee.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law Sara (Allen) McCoy, Andrea Kelley and Lance Jeffers, Allison (Damon) Minor; grandchildren, Trae Smith (Hensley Swenn) and son Tripp, Kaiman Smith, Noah Chee, Taj Smith, Jackson Minor, Easton Minor, and Reese Jeffers; step-grandchildren, Brandon, Brock, and Brady McCoy and four step-great-grandchildren; also sisters, Cindy Koontz (Debra), Joleen (John) Coupe, and Glenda (Scooter) Goodwin; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and an abundance of "adopted" kids he loved like his own and a multitude of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter, Jr. and Mary Isabel (Bartlett) Koontz; grandparents, Walter, Sr. and Nancy Lavina (Harmony) Koontz, Addison and Clara (Titus) Bartlett.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Walt's memory to the newly created Medical Loan Closet through the United Methodist Church Memorial Committee (designate Walt's Medical Closet), or the Sedan Public Library, Chautauqua County Animal Shelter or Angels Care Home Health and Hospice.
