Rev. Dr. Abraham Lincoln Roach was born in Seguin, Texas to Charlie Roach and Theresa Durst. (Most records have "Mary," not "Theresa," so, her middle name may have been "Mary," which she went by). He was an almost lifelong Baptist minister, originally in various locations in Texas, eventually settling in Houston, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio sometime after marrying his 2nd wife (more on that below).

He received his undergraduate degree from Guadalupe College in Guadalupe, TX (a short lived, black college), and his Doctorate of Divinity at Paul Quinn College, another historically black college, then in Waco, TX (now in Dallas). He then worked as a pastor in several different Baptist churches around Texas, until finally settling in Houston, where he was the pastor of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.

Rev. Roach was married twice. His first wife was Charity Singletary, with whom he had 6 children between 1910 and 1920: Ellsworth Lincoln Roach, Spurgeon Cary Roach, Elnora Roach, Robert Floyd Roach, Shelly Roach & Sylvester L. Roach. They are last documented together in the 1930 Census in Beaumont, Texas. They divorced (can't find the date) and he remarried ca. 1936.

His 2nd wife was silent screen star, Kathryn Althea "Katie" Boyd. Her father had a huge, connection to the Baptist Church hierarchy. He was Secretary of of the National Baptist Church Association, and founded and developed its National Baptist Church Publishing Company etc... (see her father's obit on his memorial). Kathryn herself was the Clerk for the Publishing Co. when she was in her early 20s. She was widowed by her 2nd husband, Marvin Maceo Cloud, MD, who died in 1931 in Los Angeles. Rev. Dr. Boyd & his wife Kathryn show up together in the 1937 Houston Directory, where he was listed as a pastor at the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, just a few blocks down the street from their house. I couldn't find a marriage record for them, but they likely married ca. 1936. They were also documented in the 1940 Census in Houston and in Directory listings till at least 1943.

By the 1950 Census they had moved to Cleveland where she had previously attended Oberlin College as a young woman, and had lived for some time. His obit says, when he was living in Houston, he got a call offering him the position as Pastor at the Messiah Baptist Church in Cleveland, which was going through some difficulties and needed steady leadership. So, they moved to Cleveland where he served as Pastor of the Messiah Baptist Church until just 2 years before he passed away.
